5e OHTE Annual Conference - "History at all costs"

The 5th OHTE Annual Conference – « History at all costs » took place on 16-17 October 2025 in Strasbourg. The Conference was organised by the Council of Europe with the support of the French State, the Grand Est Region, the European Collecticity of Alsace and the City of Strasbourg as part of the Three-year contract.

During this session, the conclusions of the second report, entitled ‘Economic crises in history teaching’, were presented to an audience of politicians, academics and a large number of students from across Europe, which encouraged an open exchange on how history teaching can better prepare young people to face contemporary challenges.

This thematic report analyses how 17 countries address economic crises in school curricula, textbooks and classroom practices. It examines how students learn about the causes and consequences of events ranging from ancient times to the Great Depression and the 2008 global financial crisis – and how teaching influences their civic awareness and democratic skills.
